Abstract

The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of Rhizoctonia solani, Fusarium culmorum and F. oxysporum, which cause root rot, on the growth and yield of wheat and barley plants. Wheat cv. Yecorarogo and barley cv. Gustuo were planted in soil artificially infected with R. solani, F. culmorum and F. oxysporum. There was a significant decrease in the growth and yield parameters (the length, fresh and dry weight of roots and shoots, and the number of grains for each spike) of infected plants compared with healthy plants. Generally, fungi damaged wheat plants more than barley plants. R. solani had the greatest effect on the growth and yield of wheat and barley. F. oxysporum had the greatest effect on the content of biochemical compounds in all cases of infection. Total carbohydrates, proteins and fats decreased in the ranges of 23.28-82.77, 0.55-76.62 and 28.45-79.25%, respectively.

Key words: Rhizoctonia solani, Fusarium culmorum, F. oxysporum, wheat, barley.
